Ghanaians on social media have taken on a new trend which is somewhat absurd following a recent speech by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.

The Vice President has been trending on microblogging sites, particularly Twitter after he declared his choice of the national Identity card (Ghana Card) over road interchanges in the country’s quest for development.

Speaking at the Accra Business School, Dr. Bawumia in his quest to drive home the importance of the Ghana card since it’s inception, stated that the national identification card is more beneficial than 1,000 road interchanges if he’s pushed to the wall to make a choice.

We have implemented a national identification system and today we have 16 million Ghanaians with unique identities and that is a major transformation. And sometimes a lot of people don’t even appreciate what the impact of the Ghana Card is.

But if you gave me 1,000 interchanges and a Ghana Card, I will choose the Ghana Card because it is more impactful,” he added in his public outing on Thursday.

His comment, however did not go well with Ghanaians as many took to the microblogging site to quiz how development could be facilitated by the Ghana Card when infrastructure projects are critical to the growth of the economy.

This elicited reactions, mostly funny and critical ones from netizens on the bird app as some where calling on the Vice President not to use any interchange in the country whiles others also tempted to ‘shop’ or pay for services with the Ghana Card as they perceived it to solve a myriad of problems even amid economic crunch.
